Brazil Calls for School Governance Summit

Councilman-At-Large Harold Brazil said today, "It is imperative that the Council, Mayor and Control Board work together immediately to resolve the impasse that exists regarding the school board issue.

"Too much time has already passed. It is our school youngsters who are suffering for the lack of consensus on this issue. We must resolve the issue now so we can proceed with providing our youngsters with the best possible education."

Brazil said, "In 1998 I called for the enactment of a Parents' Bill of Rights to protect our schoolchildren and prepare them for the future. Then I urged, among other points, using our surplus to fix our school buildings, full funding for after-school programs, new academic programs instead of social promotions, computers in every classroom, reducing class size in grades K through 8, and better trained teachers and principals. I repeat that call now."

He said, "The present impasse between the Mayor, Council and Control Board is costing valuable time in improving the education process. Our youngsters are the sufferers.

"This cannot continue. I urge an immediate substantive dialogue between all parties until this issue can be resolved in the best interest of the schoolchildren."

He added, "I am willing to be held accountable to the youngsters and parents who want the very best education. They deserve no less than the best. Every kid in the District counts. They are the future of the District and they must be able to count on us."
