Board of Education Announces New Candidate for Superintendent of Schools

"Dr. Clifford B. Janey Brings Track Record of Improving Math and Reading Scores and Closing Achievement Gap Between Black and White and Hispanic and White Students "

Washington, D.C. - The District of Columbia Board of Education yesterday announced the selection of Dr. Clifford B. Janey as the choice of a team of city officials, school board members, a search committee, educators and parents to be the next Superintendent of Schools.

At a press conference attended by Mayor Anthony Williams, Council Chairman Linda W. Cropp, Councilman Kevin Chavous, the Board of Education, and Dr. Janey, School Board President Peggy Cooper Cafritz called Janey's experience and professional skills "a perfect fit for the educational needs of the children of the District of Columbia."

Janey not only brings an excellent track record as Superintendent of Schools for Rochester, New York from 1995-2002, where under his leadership, both math and reading performance on state assessments were improved, and achievement gaps between black and white students and Hispanic and white students were reduced, but as Vice President for Scholastics, Inc., he has coordinated partnerships with 20 major urban districts in areas involving language development, literacy acquisition, achievement gap initiatives and professional development.

"We know the task ahead of us is a difficult one and that this announcement is just the first step toward making our schools the kind that every child deserves," said Cafritz. "Dr. Janey has the right skills, the vision, the sense of urgency and the understanding of what it will take to make that happen."

Dr. Janey has a doctorate in Educational Policy Planning and Administration from Boston University; a master's degree in Reading and Elementary Education and a B.A. in Sociology, both from Northwestern University.

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
EDUCATION ADVISORY COLLABORATIVE

To:   Members, District of Columbia Board of Education
From:   Members, Education Advisory Collaborative
Date:   August 11, 2004
Re:   Recommendation for DCPS Superintendent

Based on careful review of the recommendations of the Superintendent Search Committee and our collective desire for an experienced, effective leader of the, District's largest public schools system, the Education Collaborative (Collaborative) recommends Dr. Clifford Janey for your consideration as superintendent of the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS). Dr. Janey displays both the vision and sense of urgency necessary to reform off public schools and we hope that you will strongly consider his proven track record of increasing student achievement in your deliberations.

While we fully recognize that the Board of Education would have preferred to receive two recommendations for the superintendency, the Collaborative members had varied opinions on the remaining candidates and were unable to reach agreement on a second recommendation. In keeping with the spirit of collaboration and consensus fostered by this search process we felt that it was critical to advance only those candidates for whom there was collective support.

We trust that you will take our recommendation under advisement and look forward to continued collaboration with you and the new Superintendent as we jointly tackle the crucial task of improving DCPS and the lives of the children it serves.

Submitted by those Collaborative members present and voting:

Mayor Anthony A. Williams
Linda A . Cropp, Chair, Council of the District of Columbia
Kevin P. Chavous, Chair, Committee on Education, Libraries and Recreation
Robert Bobb, Deputy Mayor/City Administrator
Peggy Cooper Cafritz, President, Board of Education
Mirian Saez, Vice President, Board of Education
Robert Martin, Member, Board of Education
