News Release for Immediate Release February 27, 2007 Washington Teachers' Union Endorses Fenty School Reform LegislationThe Washington Teachers’ Union (WTU) today announced its endorsement of Mayor Adrian M. Fenty’s Education Initiative, just hours before he was scheduled to testify before the DC Council during the final hearing on the bill. “The Washington Teachers’ Union understands the need for greater accountability at every level of our public schools and has been an active partner in the creation of my education initiative. I thank the Washington Teachers’ Union for their support and look forward to working with them to turn this plan into a reality for our children,” said Mayor Fenty. The WTU put the endorsement vote to its membership who overwhelming voted in favor of Mayor Fenty’s plan. Mayor Fenty has worked closely with the WTU on issues of importance to teachers. “The success of any education plan depends on teachers being on board,” said WTU President George Parker. “As classroom professionals, we are uniquely qualified to endorse a governance structure that provides the greatest opportunity for teacher success in the classroom. Our decision is based on an extensive examination of both plans as well as a survey of our 4,200 members.” |
