Statement of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton Concerning Questions Raised on Senate Consideration of Vouchers

Washington, DC--Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today released the following statement on the voucher debate in the Senate:

"We want a debate on vouchers. We will get a debate with the motion to eliminate vouchers from the D.C. appropriations. The Senate also is considering a filibuster because a much larger issue is at stake---the precedent involved in directing federal funds to private schools for the first time in U.S. history and its implications for the future of scarce federal funds for public schools. Many Senators believe that Democrats need to do in the Senate what Democrats did in the House---stand up for public schools at a time when No Child Left Behind is $9 billion in the hole, school districts are being cut and special education costs are breaking the back of public education budgets. Everyone knows, of course, that a filibuster will do little harm to the District. If there is a filibuster, the D.C. budget will be attached quickly to some other bill."
